This three-hour course will present a comprehensive contemporary view of obsessive–compulsive disorder (OCD), the common myths and misunderstandings about diagnosis and therapy, and a general framework for planning and implementing treatment.

Topics will include classification of OCD subtypes (including fear, disgust, shame, and “not-just-right” obsessions), factors that maintain and exacerbate symptoms, the interface between GAD (generalized anxiety disorder) and OCD, and the subtle role of ruminative analysis and rational disputation as ongoing cognitive compulsions. Therapist co-compulsive behaviors will be described. A meta-cognitive model which integrates classic ERP with acceptance-based systems is focused on changing the patient's relationship with his own anxious experience.

Learning Objectives:

Recognize overt and subtle forms of OCD as they present in the clinical setting
Develop a framework that serves both as a psychoeducational model for patients and a basis for planning therapeutic interventions
Identify common misunderstandings that lead to therapists to co-compulsion or inadvertently undermining treatment progress.

Target Audience: Social Workers, LCPCs, and Psychologists

Anyone interested in the topic is welcome.
